Following up from my LinkedIn post with "A Guide to 9 Key Product Management Skills that Help You Stand Out"
Hi, it’s Jen!
A little while back, I posted on LinkedIn about my product management journey and how I wanted to pay it forward by providing resources about tips and strategies about how to break into and succeeding in product management. Thank you so much for commenting on it to learn more and read what I wrote!
I can’t believe how many people were not only interested in these resources, but also just genuinely supportive and interested in my story. As promised, here is the guide that I ended up writing based off of what everyone was interested in: A Guide to 9 Key Product Management Skills that Help You Stand Out!
It covers what I think those 9 PM skills are and actionable ways that you can implement them, regardless of if you’re an aspiring or current PM. Warning: it’s LONG!
How did I get this idea? My friend Adi, who actually co-authored Swipe to Unlock, actually started a series of PM courses called Product Alliance. If you're looking for detailed interview prep resources, I would highly recommend Product Alliance’s courses and resources. They are made by a collective of PMs from top companies including Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft (including some friends of mine!)
Adi gave me early access, so I decided to snoop around the Product Alliance site to see what I would share with you. First of all, they have courses on:
How to Break into Product Management (helpful resume tips and even advice on how to get referrals)
Hacking the PM Interview (actual tips from senior PMs at top tech companies)
Deep Dives for the Top 22 Product Companies (super important for final round interviews)
BUT I also found their ultimate job list that they compiled, which has ~150 jobs from over 50 top companies! It focuses on rotational program for new grads and the fastest growing positions for industry hires with direct application links if they are available.
Sorry it took ages to get my guide and these additional to you! After thinking through the strategies and tips I found helpful, I realized that I had so much to share, so I actually ended up writing way more than the above PM skills guide. So I decided to start a newsletter, Genuinely at Work to share more learnings.
Let me know what about product management you’d want to hear about next! I’ll be responding to comments for the next couple of hours. Stay tuned to hear more! (If not, feel free to unsubscribe anytime)
Best,
Jen

Hi Jen, thanks for the guide! I’d love to see a post on how to break into PM without previous PM experience as a recent grad looking to recruit, perhaps including resume tips on showcasing PM skills, how to get referrals, and moving beyond the informational interview/coffee chat with a PM.
